Standing Room Only at the LFRW Leadership Conference

02/24/2010 6:18pm

Over 100 members and guests attended the first-ever LFRW Leadership Conference at the W. Baton Rouge Tourist and Convention Center in Port Allen, Louisiana this past Saturday, February 20.

The positive energy from our Saint's spectacular win in the Super Bowl and the largest-ever Mardi Gras in New Orleans and around the state was carried over into the Leadership Conference by our members.

Patt Parker, a member of the NFRW and a graduate of U.S. National War College with a concentration in Leadership, Strategic Planning and Organizational Effectiveness, opened the session with an intriguing introduction to the challenges and potentials of Leadership.   Patt recommended two books that our members are anxious to explore: When Generations Collide by Lynne Lancaster and David Stillman and a book on the history of our national organization, the National Federation of Republic Women, entitled Republican Woman by Catherine E. Rymph.

Sessions followed on Protocol, led by LFRW Program/Protocol Vice Chairman Anne Price and Parliamentary Procedure by Nate Thompson, VP Metairie Unit, of the National Association of Parliamentarians.

A delicious boxed lunch provided by “Honey Baked Ham” was enjoyed by all. Concurrent sessions followed lunch. LFRW Corresponding Secretary/Webmaster June Williams, and LFRW Executive Assistant Betty LeBlanc, presented a detailed introduction to the LFRW Website and instructions on setting up an individual club website. LaGOP Communication Director and the War-Room Director to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's 2008 Presidential Campaign Aaron Baer gave a professional presentation on Working with the Media. LFRW Treasurer Karen Fandal, and LFRW Executive Vice President Lynn Pablovich, led a session on Reporting Membership and Tips for Treasurers.

Also in attendance were NFRW 4th Vice President Jessie Morton and NFRW Membership Chairman Tonya Stiel.

The Conference enabled members across the state to interact and learn from each other in addition to hearing the speakers. LFRW members were given the chance to connect with our national organization - the National Federation of Republican Women -   and our own state-wide powerhouse - Louisiana Federation of Republican Women. Members left the conference knowing the individual clubs are not alone, and when banding together, we are a woman's force to be reckoned with!

  It was a stellar day!

LFRW MEMBERS APPOINTED TO NFRW COMMITTEES

02/14/2010 2:19pm

Six members of LFRW have been appointed to Committees of the NFRW and will be traveling to Oklahoma City in March to attend the NFRW Board Meeting.

Two of our members are Chairs of Standing Committees and have a vote on the NFRW Board - Tonya Stiel and Suzanne Crow. Tonya will head the Membership Committee and our Past President of the LFRW, Suzanne, will lead the Program Committee. Linda Vinsanau will be a member of the Fund Raising Committee, Kristie Thomas will work with Suzanne on the Program Committee, Jackie Glover will be a member of the Membership Committee and our own President, Argiro Morgan, was appointed to the Americanism and the Speaker’s Bureau Committees.

Congratulations to all. We are certain you will make Louisiana proud!

THE VOTE HEARD AROUND THE WORLD

02/14/2010 2:03pm

Scott Brown’s victory for the Senate seat in Massachusetts was a shocking rebuttal to the policies of the President and his Democratic cohorts in Congress. It not only deprived the Democrats of the 60 Senate votes to have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, it also showed that a charismatic tongue is not enough to mesmerize the majority of voters - even in the royal-blue state of Massachusetts.

Scott Brown’s ride in his 2005 GMC truck through the cold, snow and ice along the roads of Massachusetts will be remembered as was the other ride of an earlier American patriot - Paul Revere!

LFRW women played a part in Scott Brown’s victory. 100 of our members used their own phone to call Massachusetts’s voters and some contributed the funds he needed to win the race. He indeed used our Saint’s motto - FINISH STRONG - and now the game has changed in Washington.

But our members are not over-confident. We are fighting a devious and duplicitous adversary. The rhetoric will change but the ideology goals will remain.

Thank you, LFRW members, for helping “Mr. Brown Go to Washington!”

LFRW'S SEARCH FOR AN OUTSTANDING TEACHER

12/11/2009 10:00pm

Two years ago the Louisiana Federation of Republican Women decided to give our Teacher of the Year Award to an outstanding teacher of our American heritage. Never has our search for an educator committed to the transmission of American history and government been so relevant and important.

Young voters flocked to the polls in record numbers at the last national election.   Yet study after study have shown that even college seniors from America’s most elite universities have a limited knowledge of American history, its founding principles, and the American Constitution. Few colleges offer American history as a required course and many elective courses undergraduates take do not offer a rigorous study of our heritage.

Whatever knowledge our young people have about our heritage and about civic responsibility, they learn primarily in junior and senior high school. By encouraging excellence in the teaching of American history and civics, we are rewarding teachers who help their students not take our freedom for granted.

The winner of the Award will receive a monetary gift, a plaque and a certificate as well as the opportunity to compete at the national level as Louisiana’s entry for the NFRW Teaching Award. The winner will also be honored at the Board Meeting and Pink Tea for Republican Women at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans in April 2010..

Application packets were sent out to Presidents in the fall and were available at the Board Meeting in Alexandria. The deadline for submitting applications is January 31st. The required application form is available in the Member’s Only Area of our website. Click on the MEMBER CENTER and then FORMS for the application.

NOW LET'S WORK ON THE SENATE!

11/21/2009 6:06pm

The Center for Individual Freedom wrote, “The fight to defeat
government-run health care is just beginning. We may have lost this
battle, but we are still far from losing the war.”  LFRW echoes
those sentiments.

If they succeed in quieting our opposition, they will rest
comfortably with the idea that they have outmaneuvered us by strong-
arm tactics and clever stratagems.

But Congress has aroused a sleeping lion and we shall ferociously
battle on.  We cannot wait until 2010 to send those seeking to retain
their seats home packing!  We must do all we can to stop this bill now.

Our fight now shifts to the U.S. Senate.

Give her an explicit, firm yet respectful message that you strongly
oppose any government involvement in health care that goes beyond
making health insurance portable, purchasable across state
boundaries, and consumer-driven without any government option.

Write her a personal note!  She will read it!  Send faxes.

And don’t forget to call the offices of Senator David Vitter and
thank him for his strenuous opposition to the Obama-Pelosi-Reid
Healthcare Plan.  His offices and phone numbers can be found at

outrageous disregard of the majority voices of American citizens.

Till the next step -
