BYLAWS LITERACY COMMITTEE

LFRW Bylaws Literacy Committee Chairman:
Chairman

REGINA WILSON
Term 2019-2021, Ouachita Parish WR Club

(Committee name change in 2017) The Literacy Chairman:
The Education and Literacy Committee works to create a more knowledgeable and responsible citizenry.  Our members know that without education, our democratic polity would perish.  LFRW is determined to help all children become literate citizens and to honor teachers who are outstanding in their classrooms.
Two state projects come under the charge of the Education and Literacy Committee:
  • The Dictionary Project
  • Teacher of the Year Award

LFRW last year, alone, gave over 6,000 personal dictionaries to children in over 40 Louisiana schools.  The work of LFRW in this project is coordinated with the National Dictionary Project, a 501 C 3 Foundation headed by its founder, Mary French. The dictionaries are purchased through the Foundation that has become international in scope.  A unique bookplate, designed by Linda Begue, a talented LFRW member, is placed on its opening page, and our members deliver these books to children in local schools.

Every year LFRW honors an outstanding teacher by its Teacher of the Year Award.  Clubs nominate one teacher whose impact on the lives of children is outstanding. In 2007 and 2009 the Award was dedicated to Excellence in the Teaching of American History.  A Committee made up of members from regions across the state rates each applicant according to a given set of criteria.  The winner of the competition receives a monetary prize, a plaque, and a letter of commendation, and has the opportunity to compete for the National My Favorite Teacher Award of the NFRW.
